PD Women's College, Jalpaiguri was established with the aim of encouraging quality higher education solely for women not only in a developmentally backward district of West Bengal but also in the developmentally laggard region of North Bengal. It is located on the bank of Karola River, a tributary of Tista, in the south-eastern part of Jalpaiguri town, the headquarters of the district of West Bengal. It is spread across an area of 5.43 acres. The college has been acknowledged by the University Grants Commission of India under 2(f) and 12(B) since 1956 and is affiliated with the University of North Bengal.
The college has been accredited to National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B++ grade in 2016. PD Women's College Admission can be done online on the official website of the college. The College was established in 1950 on the philanthropy of Late Prasannadeb Raikat (after whom the college is gratefully named) and his wife Rani Ashrumati Devi.

In addition to Honors and two particular topics in Honors Course or three particular topics in General Course, each year the learners have to study on a mandatory document. Students must learn Environmental Studies in Part I. Students must study compulsory English in Part II and learners must learn one of the major Indian languages (MIL) in Part III: (Bengali-taught in university) or (Hindi / Nepali / Urdu — not taught in school).
